Average review score:

A forgotten side of Mr Greene
This book -- all 800 or so pages -- is a goldmine for Greene fans. It's chock full of reviews, essays, articles, and letters, and it shows Mr Greene at his wittiest. Some of the reviews are absolutely scathing, and his insight into the film business is enlightening. Buy it.

Graham Greene: Man of Paradox

Average review score:

a collection of interviews with graham greene
a.f.cassis, the editor, has provided readers with a wide variety of interviews with graham greene from such diverse sources as his cousin barbara greene, his school friend claud cockburn, anthony burgess,v.s.pritchett, and evelyn waugh-well-known writers. there are fifty-seven excerpts in this book. Pritchett (pages 281-282) writes of Greene "as one of those tall,long-legged Englishman, wearing the dark grey suits of club members and a look of misleading anonymity common to members of the professional class..." The interviews show the reader a great storyteller who believes that we are all equal before God and a writer with deep concerns about injustice. If you enjoy Greene you will love this book.

A Grammar of Belizean Creole: Complications from Two Existing United States Dialects (Berkeley Models of Grammars, Vol. 7)
Published in Hardcover by Peter Lang Publishing (June, 1999)
Author: Laurie A. Greene
Average review score:

A terrific compendium on a difficult subject
This is the most comprehensive work to date on the obscure study of Belizean Creole I have encountered. This is a MUST for all students of the creole languaguage and creole enthusiasts the world over. While the subject may be daunting to the unfamiliar, the author does a superb job of explaining the intricacies of Creole languages. This is appropriate for both the academic and lay reader particularly the section on the social use of language.

Greene and Greene Architecture As a Fine Art
Published in Paperback by Gibbs Smith Publisher (July, 1983)
Author: Randell L. Makinson
Average review score:

The place to start.
This is a fine introduction to the Greenes and their accomplishments. Particular attention is paid (quite rightly) to the 'ultimate bungalows,' the large houses they built between 1907 and 1909 for which they pulled out all the stops. If you fall under the Greene & Greene spell, though, you will eventually want large color photographs, which means you will have to buy more books. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Greene County, 1803-1908
Published in Paperback by Heritage Books (June, 1990)
Author: Austin M. Patterson
Average review score:

Review of Greene County, 1803-1908, by Homecoming Assoc.
Being born and bred in the area detailed in this history, I naturally enjoyed it. I have referred to it countless times, both recreationally and in times when I needed to secure certain facts. It has a layout unlike those found in today's reference books, but one not unusual for the time in which it was written. Included are several wonderful pictures of life in the 1800's of Xenia, Beavercreek, Spring Valley, etc. The pictures range from storefronts, main streets, grain elevators, trains, schools, and churches to historical markers and countryside scenes. Descriptions and dates are given for nearly all the illustrations, which adds to the value of this historical book. Anyone interested in Greene County, Ohio for personal and/or research reasons would benefit greatly from the reading of Greene County, 1803-1908.

Greene on Greens and Grains
Published in Hardcover by Black Dog & Leventhal Pub (March, 1900)
Author: Bert Greene
Average review score:

One of the best cookbooks for flavorful cuisine!
I love Bert's cookbooks! They contain some of the most interesting and savory recipes I've encountered. From "Tagine Aid El Kebir" (Moroccan Lamb Stew), in the Couscous section, to "Georgian Yogurt and Barley Soup" to "Triple-Threat Onion Pilaf" with Bulgur, I always know where to go for a tasty meal.

As an added bonus, Bert includes personal stories and anecdotes that are sure to peak your interest or have you rolling on the floor (be sure to read the introduction to the chapter on bulgur where Bert describes his first sampling in a bordello in Paris).

Many of the recipes are quite healthy, such as "Sally's Crazy Health Bread" and "Healthy Farmer's Wife's Pot-Roasted Chicken" (with wheat berries). Many others are just plain good! The health-conscious may want to consider substituting healthier ingredients for some of the ones listed in the cookbook. I use Jane Brody's excellent "Good Food Gourmet" for ideas about healthy eating and ingredient substitution. Then again, many of the recipes in "The Grains Cookbook" are Mediterranean in origin. I've read many articles delineating how this is the healthiest cuisine of all. It is the typical American fare that is unhealthy, full of processed foods and saturated fats that are the real killers. Personally, I like Bert's recipes just the way they are.

This book may be out of print. It is certainly worth tracking down and purchasing.

For those who like this book, I would also recommend "Flatbreads and Flavors" by Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Dugid. This cookbook takes one on culinary odyssey from central Asia, through Europe to North America in quest of flatbreads and the flavorful dishes that accompany them.
